How to reach Kinshasa

Travel Visa

At the exemption of a few countries mentioned below, all international travelers need to apply for a visa prior to entering the country. Information on visa application can be found at your nearest Congolese embassy or consulate. It is advised to apply early enough for the process to be done on time. You can also apply for an e-visa at the following website: https://evisa.gouv.cd/ You must be advised however that you might be asked to pay extra fee on arrival.
Nationalities not needing a visa: Burundi, Congo Brazzaville, Rwanda, and Zimbabwe
Nationalities allowed to receive visa on arrival: Kenya, Mauritius, and Tanzania.

Covid 19 Information

 

  • Upon arrival and exit, fully vaccinated travelers do not require to submit to a COVID-19 test at the airport, provided they have proof of vaccination.
  • Unvaccinated travelers must submit at negative COVID-19 test at the airport on arrival and will be asked to have a test done on arrival, which costs $45 (have exact change on hand).
  • To exit the DRC, all unvaccinated passengers 11 years of age and older must present a negative COVID-19 test from the INRB or a laboratory approved by the Ministry of Health, from within 3 days prior to departure. The cost of the test through the INRB is US$30. Visit INRBCOVID.com for information on testing in the DRC.

Additional Information

  • You should get vaccinated against yellow fever before entering DRC. Your yellow fever card will be checked on arrival.
  • On departure, you will be requested to pay airport taxes, called Go Pass, and costing $55 per person.

Health

Malaria and typhoid are very common diseases in Kinshasa. Tap water is not drinkable and, while most accommodation provides mosquito nets, it is useful to have mosquito repellent products or take malaria prevention medication.

Money

Some credit cards are accepted in Kinshasa. The local currency is the Congolese Franc but US Dollars are widely used. US Dollars should be in good condition and issued after 2001 or they will not be accepted or changed at banks. There are a number of ATMs that dispense US dollars in Kinshasa; take normal security precautions when withdrawing money. Western Union and other money transfer agencies are present in most main towns

Transportation within Kinshasa

Common public transport includes buses and minibuses. Taxis and moto-taxis are also available and their cost can be slightly higher.

Beside these options, there are several renting companies which offer a chauffeur together with the car, since driving in Kinshasa is not very straightforward
